The Portuguese State will compensate the family of the Ukrainian citizen murdered in March in the custody of the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) in more than 800 thousand euros.
The decision of the Ombudsman, Maria Lúcia Amaral, was based on the “cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment” to which Ihor Homeniuk was subjected at the SEF facilities, at Lisbon airport, on March 12, which resulted in the death of the citizen. Ukrainian.
According to Diário de Notícias, which sold again this week, Ihor’s family will receive immediate compensation of 712,950 euros, to which is added a pension for the couple’s two children, while they study, until the 28th year, in a total that the family lawyer estimates at 834 thousand euros.
The amount is close to but does not reach the million euros of the civil damages claim that had been presented to the court on behalf of the widow, Oksana Homeniuk, and the children, Veronika and Oleg, aged 14 and nine.
The amount also includes 50 thousand euros for Ihor’s father, Yaroslav, who was also a widower a month before his son’s trip to Portugal and, according to Ukrainian law, is also an heir.
In the decision, to which the Diário de Notícias had access, the Ombudsman’s Office adds that “due to the actions whose practice is established, or the omission of care in the long period prior to death, it can be concluded by an intense degree of suffering spread over time “inflicted on foreign citizens.
Maria Lúcia Amaral emphasizes that “this suffering was undoubtedly aggravated by the lack of knowledge of languages other than Ukrainian and Russian, with the consequent difficulty in understanding what was happening.”
