With the forecast of low temperatures from January 1, the Porto Chamber has prepared the distribution of blankets, food and heat measures for the homeless, as well as the emergency reception, for those who want it.

The contingency plan for the homeless in Porto has been active since eight on Wednesday, reports the City Council.

The decision was made after an extraordinary meeting of the NPISA (Center for the Intervention and Planning of the Homeless) of Porto, taking into account the need to screen the interested population that intends to go to the Covid-19 Emergency Shelter Center. This structure, created by the Municipality on the premises of the old Joaquim Urbano Hospital, has a capacity for 40 people.

Between this Wednesday and Thursday, the street teams – which have elements from the Department of Social Cohesion, Social Security, Police and Municipal Civil Protection, Sapadores do Porto, among other organizations – will sensitize people in refugee situations to integrate the Center of Reception, in order to articulate the programming, transportation and projection of the interested parties. “A necessary work in the face of the pandemic situation, and that will have the collaboration of the Porto Ocidental and Porto Oriental Health Center Group in the covid-19 test, upon entering the Center,” explains the City Council.

Reception at the metro station

Starting this Friday, January 1 and during the days in which the Contingency Plan remains active, two multidisciplinary teams will tour the streets of Porto, ensuring the transport of people who wish to stay at the Dos Aliados Metro station (which will remain open during the night, for this purpose, between 9:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. during the period of validity of the Contingency Plan). Blankets and food will be provided and, the next day, those interested will be transferred to the Emergency Reception Center.

The Civil Protection and volunteer teams will reinforce the support with blankets, food and hot drinks for people who do not accept the possibilities made available to them.

The three solidarity restaurants, recalls the Municipality, remain in operation, ensuring about 500 meals a day.
