Second wave of the pandemic accentuates the fall in overnight stays in tourist accommodation in RAM

According to the Madeira Statistics Department (DREM), in November 2020, the tourist accommodation sector should have registered 25,200 guests and 143,800 overnight stays, corresponding to year-on-year variations. -72.8% and -73.7%, respectively (-52.4% and -58.5% in October, in the same order).

RAM once again had a drop in overnight stays of more than 70%, interrupting the trend that has manifested since May of decreases that are less and less significant month after month.

The DREM also advances that, for the purposes of comparability with the data released by the INE, it is necessary to exclude local accommodations with less than 10 beds, and according to this logic of finding results, overnight stays in tourist accommodations show a decrease of 75 , 4% compared to November 2019, a less penalizing variation than that verified at the national level (-76.7%).

The DREM also mentions that overnight stays by residents in Portugal will have decreased by 46.4% (-9.9% in October) to reach 31.5 thousand and representing 21.9% of the total, while those of non-residents will have decreased 77.0% (-64.9% in the previous month), standing at 112.3 thousand. The number of guests who arrived with residence in the country was 10.1 thousand, which translates into a decrease of 54.0% (-13.1% in October), with non-resident guests estimated at 15.1 thousand ( 78.7% year-on-year drop, more pronounced than the previous month when it was 64.2%). In the country, overnight stays by residents will have decreased by 58.6% (-21.7% in October) to 543.3 thousand, which represents 57.2% of the total, while those by non-residents will have decreased 85.2% (-76.4% in the previous month), standing at 407.3 thousand.

In the Region, the main issuing markets for non-residents recorded very significant drops in overnight stays, over 70%. The French market registered the sharpest fall with -85.7% in overnight stays (-80.3% in October), followed by the British with -72.8% (-46.5%) and the German with -71 , 4% (-67.6% in the previous month).

In November, 60.7% of tourist accommodation establishments will be closed or there will be no movement of guests. However, in the reference month, the hospitality industry accounted for 64.0% of establishments with customer movement (72.2% in October).
