André Ventura, leader and sole deputy of Chega, saw this Tuesday rejected the request for suspension of the mandate that this parliamentarian had requested to dedicate himself to the presidential campaign, an electoral act that will take place on January 24. This decision was taken in the parliamentary committee on Transparency and the Statute of Deputies.

PS, PSD, BE and PCP voted against the opinion presented by the centrist deputy João Almeida, which envisaged the replacement of André Ventura during the electoral campaign related to the presidential elections. The CDS, PAN and Socialist deputies Jorge Lacão and Isabel Oneto voted in favor of this proposal.

This commission will meet again at the beginning of 2021, more specifically on January 5, to analyze a new proposal, which should be presented by a Socialist deputy.

“Despite acknowledging that the issue is not fully provided for in the statute of deputies, if the parliament does not give me this suspension, Chega will be left without a voice in the Assembly of the Republic and unable to participate in important debates on issues such as the euthanasia, or state of emergency. That would be unfair, “André Ventura told the Lusa news agency on Tuesday, before the decision was announced.

The presidential candidate supported by Chega said he hoped there would be “common sense” in the analysis of the issue, so that his place in the Assembly of the Republic could be temporarily occupied by Diogo Pacheco Amorim.
