Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic confirmed that a girl died as a result of the 6.4 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale that hit the country today, in particular the city of Petrinja (center).
“We were told that a girl died …, we have no information about other victims,” Andrej Plenkovic said, speaking to local media.
The Croatian prime minister and several Croatian government ministers traveled to Petrinja to witness the damage caused by the earthquake at the site.
This is the first death confirmed by the Croatian authorities after the severe shock.
Moments earlier, the mayor of Petrinja, Darinko Dumbovic, had already advanced with the possibility of an unknown number of deaths and injuries in that area.
“Petrinja is in ruins. There are dead and injured, there are missing people. There are no houses that have not been damaged. Ambulances cannot reach everywhere. It is chaos,” said Dumbovic, quoted by international agencies.
Moments before making these statements, the mayor of Petrinja had advanced to another Croatian ‘half’ that “the emergency services were beginning to rescue people from the rubble” and that the army units were already on the ground helping with the rescue work . .
Posted images of Petrinja, a city of about 20,000 residents, show heavily damaged and destroyed roofs, as well as streets littered with bricks and other debris.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the 6.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 12:19 (11:19 in Lisbon) at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The epicenter was about 50 kilometers southeast of the Croatian capital Zagreb, 2.9 kilometers south-southeast of Petrinja and 8.7 kilometers southwest of Sisak.
The same area had already been hit by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake on Monday.
After today’s earthquake, two aftershocks were felt, both of more than 4.0 in magnitude, according to the Croatian Seismological Institute.
Other sources, such as the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, attributed the current magnitude between 6.2 and 6.3 on the Richter scale.
The earthquake felt today also caused the suspension of the operation of a nuclear power plant in Slovenia “as a precautionary measure,” a spokeswoman for the Krsko plant told France-Presse (AFP).
