Although the Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that this “will not necessarily be the largest” and that the world will have to learn to live with Covid-19, even with the existence of a vaccine.
“This is a wake-up call. Now we are learning how to do things better: science, logistics, training and government leadership, how to communicate better. But the planet is fragile,” said Mark Ryan, leader of the WHO emergency program, this Tuesday.
“It remains to be seen how well vaccines are taken, how close we are to a level of coverage that can give us the opportunity to eliminate the virus,” he said. “The existence of a vaccine, even with high efficacy, is not a guarantee of eliminating or eradicating an infectious disease. This is a very high barrier that we must overcome ”, he stressed during a press conference this morning.
“If there is one thing we must eliminate from this pandemic, with all the tragedies and losses, it is that we must act together. We have to honor those of us who lose by improving what we do every day ”, the expert appealed.
Professor David Heymann, leader of the WHO’s strategy and technical advisory group for infection risk, warned that the virus will eventually become endemic, that is, it will become a frequent disease of our day.
“It seems to us that the fate of Sars-Cov-2 is to become endemic, just like four other coronaviruses,” he explained, adding that the virus will continue to mutate as it infects and reproduces between cells.
However, the level of danger will be less. “We have tools to save lives and these tools, in combination with good public health, will allow us to learn to live with Covid-19,” explained the epidemiologist.
