In 157 regions, the incidence of the pandemic increased from December 7 to 20 compared to the figures for December 4 to 17, the General Health Directorate (DGS) revealed this Monday. However, in 137 municipalities the evolution was positive, with a reduction in the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The new list of cases per 100 thousand inhabitants in the previous 14 days released today covers the period from December 7 to 20, just three days ahead of the previous list (December 4 to 17), which served as the basis for the application of measures by the Government in a state of emergency that runs from December 24 to January 7.
If on December 17 there were 109 municipalities at the two most serious risk levels, 30 at extreme risk and 79 at very high risk, on December 20 there were 116 municipalities at these levels. The number of municipalities at extreme risk (960 or more cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days) decreased to 26, but municipalities at very high risk (480 to 960 cases) increased to 90. At high risk (240 to 480 cases ) there are now 93 municipalities, two less than before, and at moderate risk (less than 240 cases), now there are 100 against 104 in the previous list.
It should be noted that this list only indicates the trend of evolution of the situation, not changing the classification of municipalities by risk level for the purposes of the measures in force until January 7. Only in the next update of the municipal classification will the parentheses have an impact on the applicable restrictions. The new list is not expected to be released until early 2021.
Default goes from moderate to extreme risk in 3 days
The municipality of Mora was the one that increased the incidence of the pandemic the most, from 193 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 1,764. This would lead the Alentejo municipality to go from moderate to extreme risk.
It is also in Alentejo where the second highest rise occurs. Vidigueira sees an increase from 109 to 835 new cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, which corresponds to a moderate to very high risk change.
There are five counties that rise to the extreme risk bracket: Mora, Alfândega da Fé, Amarante, Figueiró dos Vinhos and Idanha-a-Nova, with the exception of Mora, all of which were very high risk.
Guimarães and Famalicão no longer run an extreme risk
On the contrary, Póvoa de Lanhoso, Póvoa de Varzim, Vila Nova de Famalicão, Vila do Conde, Vieira do Minho, Guimarães, Santa Marta de Penaguião, Oliveira de Azeméis and Aguiar da Beira leave the most severe risk level.
Here, Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão stand out, which had been at extreme risk for more than a month.
Counties in the two worst echelons increase to 119
Even so, the number of municipalities in the two most severe levels, and which have the strictest restrictions, increased by 10, from 109 to 119.
There are 22 municipalities that have gone to very high or extreme risk levels: Mora, Vidigueira, Manteigas, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Castanheira de Pêra, Nisa, Vendas Novas, Celorico de Basto, Elvas, Condeixa-a-Nova, Leiria, São Pedro do Sul, Vila Flor, Viana do Alentejo, Vila Franca do Campo, Mangualde, Penedono. Alcochete, Rio Maior, Santarém, Coimbra and Odemira.
In the opposite direction, the municipalities of Montijo, Ovar, Estarreja, Lousada, Albergaria-a-Velha, Fafe, Paços de Ferreira, Murça, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Chamusca and Torre de Moncorvo.
Here, it is worth highlighting the decline to high risk in Ovar, Lousada, Fafe and Paços de Ferreira, municipalities that were among the most affected by the pandemic.
Vimioso with more than 3% of the population infected in 14 days
Vimioso is the municipality with the highest incidence in this period, registering 3,207 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, that is, more than 3% of its population was infected by the coronavirus in these 14 days.
They are followed by Castelo de Vide (2,398 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Marvão (2,396), Mourão (2,286) and Penamacor (2,061).
In 25 counties the incidence exceeds a thousand new infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
Lisbon registers a slight improvement, going from 518 to 509, while Porto shows a more pronounced positive evolution, with a decrease from 624 to 528 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
