Infraestructuras de Portugal (IP) published an order in the Diário da República authorizing the contracting of studies to carry out one of the works provided for in the National Investment Plan, which will determine the viability of a railway connection with the Beja Airport. According to “Dinheiro Vivo”, this Monday, December 28, the investment could reach 100 million euros.

The mayor of Beja, in an interview with “Dinheiro Vivo”, adds that “this detour may give the airport greater capacity”. The studies commissioned by IP will also include the possibility of modernizing and electrifying the route between Casa Branca and Beja, as well as the electronic installation of the 63.5 km stretch.

The plan, with a total budget of 230 million euros, aims to modernize the airport by 2025, the Alentejo and southern railway lines, as well as a possible connection to Faro airport. The Beja airport has served mainly for aircraft maintenance.
