Infrastructures of Portugal analyzes variant of the Alentejo Line. The work can exceed 100 million euros.

Infraestructuras de Portugal (IP) will study the connection from the Beja airport to the Alentejo railway line. The infrastructure administrator published, this week, in the “Diário da República”, an order authorizing the contracting of studies and projects to carry out one of the works provided for in the National Investment Plan (PNI 2030).

The estimated investment can exceed 100 million euros. “This diversion can give the airport additional capacity,” says Paulo Arsénio, JN / Dinheiro Vivo, president of that Alentejo municipality. In operation since 2011, the Beja airport involved an investment of 33 million euros, “a good part” of Community funds.

In the first decade of operation, it was used primarily for aircraft maintenance. An example of this is the inauguration of a maintenance hangar by the Portuguese company Hi Fly. For passengers, there is only a check-in capacity of 250 people per hour. The reinforcement of commercial aviation will depend on the infrastructure expansion works.

Completion by 2025

A possible connection between the airport and the railway is included in the studies that IP will launch to modernize and electrify the route between Casa Branca and Beja. The installation of electronic signage is also included in the 63.5 km section. This work will be carried out within the framework of the PNI 2030, which includes a total budget of 230 million euros for the modernization, until 2025, of the Alentejo and Sur railway lines, in the section between Torre Vã and Tunes and with a possible connection to the airport. from Faro.

The modernization of the Casa Branca-Beja section and the airport variant alone could cost between 88 and 120 million euros. Paulo Arsénio fears that it will be “very difficult, if not impossible,” for the works to be completed in 2025.

IP also authorized the contracting of studies for the modernization and duplication of the section between Bombel and Poceirão, also on the Alentejo Line. These works, planned almost a decade ago, can solve the pre-saturation scenario of freight transport by this route.
