Filipa Patão becomes the coach of the Benfica women’s team.
Coach Filipa Patão said this Sunday that guiding Benfica’s main soccer team “is a dream come true” and chose “work and rigor” as basic tools to achieve success.
“I was very surprised and happy with this invitation, it was impossible to reject it, it was a dream come true,” Filipa Patão told the club’s website shortly after being announced as the new coach of the main team, replacing Luis Andrade.
Filipa Patão, who was an assistant coach of the senior team, expressed the desire to create “a way of playing Benfica”, a philosophy that she considered fundamental for “the project to go well”.
“Every Benfica player lives off victories, of course, but we want a team that plays for Benfica,” he said, choosing the word courage to define his project: “Courage to be different, courage to leave a mark, courage to want to be special” .
Filipa Patão, 31, will start his job on Tuesday, with training sessions, and will have Tiago Carmo, André Vale and Marco Sousa as assistants, and Pedro Espinha as goalkeeping coach.
Former central defender Filipa Patão was international with Portugal, having represented Clube de Futebol Benfica and Estoril-Praia on December 1, teams in which he won seven championships, six Portuguese Cups and one Super Cup.
As a coach, Filipa Patão has a 13-year career in Benfica’s football schools, in training and competition teams.
On Saturday, Benfica announced the departure of Luís Andrade, who has led the team for the past year and a half, having won the Super Cup in 2019.
Benfica occupies the second position in the South Zone of the championship, three points behind Sporting, with which they suffered the only defeat internally.
