The maritime authorities assisted, off Sagres, a 370-meter-long Danish-flagged ship, which was adrift due to a fire in the engine room, controlled on board without injuries.

According to the National Maritime Authority (AMN), the alert was received overnight through the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Lisbon, after the fire left the boat without propulsion. The ship is “anchored about two nautical miles (approximately 3.7 km) from Sagres”, Vila do Bispo municipality, Faro district, AMN said in a statement.

“There were no injuries from the fire, only the area where the fire occurred was affected,” clarified AMN, specifying that the maritime authorities sent “a ship from the Lagos Maritime Police Local Command and the ship ‘NRP Cassiopeia’ , of the Portuguese Navy, to follow the situation “.

AMN said that since the situation was considered controlled and “until the end of the morning, they worked to anchor the ship, which happened around 12:30.”

The National Maritime Authority and Navy resources are still “monitoring the situation at the scene” and “the ship’s owner has already been contacted and now work is underway to repair the damage on board” the Danish container ship, he added.

AMN said “tugs have also been activated for the site,” which “are expected to arrive at the site by the end of today.”

The Lagos port captaincy is coordinating the work, in conjunction with the MRCC, and the “anti-sea pollution team based in the South Maritime Department, belonging to the AMN, has already been” activated “and put on hold” .
