The Queen’s Speech. “Even in the darkest nights there is hope for a new dawn”

With paperwork signed for the post-Brexit trade deal with the EU, the UK is packed to go, at a Christmas season when the pandemic opened the door to loneliness and isolation. It is the “new normal” -as they call it-, installed even in Windsor Castle, where Queen Elizabeth II addressed the British people to leave a message of hope. The 94-year-old monarch addressed her subjects, in the usual Christmas speech, this year so different for so many, to assure them that “they are not alone.”

Filmed in the Green Room, the Queen was “proud” of the “indomitable spirit” of the British and Commonwealth communities who “superbly overcame challenges throughout the year.”

Elizabeth II urged the efforts of health professionals facing the pandemic on the front line and highlighted the “good Samaritans who emerged in society, showing care and respect for all, without distinction of gender, race, history, revealing that each one of us is special and equal in the eyes of God ”. And he highlighted the unity of his people: “Incredibly, a year that necessarily moved us away, brought many closer together.”

The speech did not forget, however, all those who “mourn the loss of a loved one, friends or family”, recognizing that, “for many, this year will be tinged with sadness.”

The monarch reminded all those who, in times of isolation, “would like a simple hug or a handshake”, assuring them that “if it is your case, they are not alone”.

In an emotional tone, Elizabeth II said that “life must go on” and that “even in the darkest nights there is hope of a new dawn.”
