João Pedro Matos Fernandes, Minister of the Environment, revealed this Wednesday that he suspended the environmental impact assessment for the construction of photovoltaic panels in Quinta da Torre Bela, a process in public consultation until January 20

“After speaking with the Portuguese Environment Agency, I decided to suspend the environmental impact assessment, including its public consultation. Licensing depends on the environmental impact study. The previous study is out of date, the situation has changed ”, stressed the government official interviewed in“ SIC Notícias ”.

The Minister of the Environment highlighted that he gave “30 days to the Portuguese Environment Agency to carry out the necessary investigations so that these investigations result in a reformulation of this study or an addition to it.”

Minutes later, the Ministry of the Environment made this decision official: “The immediate suspension of the environmental impact assessment procedure, including the public consultation, regarding the photovoltaic plants in lot 18 of the solar auction in July 2019, considering that the aforementioned Photovoltaic plants are located inside the Quinta da Torre Bela, where a mountain occurred during which more than 500 animals were slaughtered, events that prompted communication to the Public Ministry ”.

The ministry headed by Matos Fernandes also ordered “that the Portuguese Environmental Agency carry out, within 30 days, investigations into the events that occurred and, as a result of the aforementioned investigations, affirm, that is, if the Environmental Impact Study it must be reformulated or added as part of the environmental impact assessment procedure for the project in question ”.

In addition to the suspension of the environmental impact assessment for the construction of photovoltaic panels in Quinta da Torre Bela, the minister revealed that the Government has filed a complaint with the Public Ministry and an inspection of all tourist hunting areas has also been ordered ( 1,500 zones).
