The president of the Refereeing Council of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), José Fontelas Gomes, admitted having opened communications between the referee and the video referee (VAR) in real time, but this is not a step that should be taken immediately.

“Right now it is very difficult to put real-time communications into practice, but in the future this is the way to give the VAR greater transparency and credibility,” he admitted during the “VAR Future Challenges” conference, organized by Deportivo.

«We need time, training and learning. At the beginning [em 2017] We put some clips in the media, just for the fans to realize that there were no secrets there, to understand how we work with VAR. We have a lot of work to do in this area, “he admitted.

On the other hand, the president shared another concern: the content would not be the problem, but the way the referees speak to each other: «[O tempo real] it would lead people to criticize the way the referee and the VAR speak and not the decision.

The issue came up after former international rugby referee Nigel Owens said it was confusing for him not to understand the reasons for the decisions made by the VAR. “The coaches, players and spectators do not understand the reason for the decision. In rugby the referee explains, people see on the screen and understand, but in football it is difficult because the referee does not explain. What they have to do is that the referees can explain why they are making or changing a decision. This will make people notice and it takes a lot of pressure, ”he said.
