The British authorities have warned that it will be prohibited to introduce animal products that contain meat or milk into the European Union as of January 1, when the country leaves the community.
“As of January 1, 2021, animal products containing meat or a dairy product (such as a ham and cheese sandwich) cannot be introduced into the EU,” the British government said this week.
The first affected by this prohibition will be the truckers, who make numerous trips between the two blocks and usually store food for long trips through Europe. The objective of the measure is to avoid the introduction of contagious diseases, since these products can transmit pathogens.
In addition to meat and milk, all derived products, such as pates, sausages, butter or yogurt, were also affected by the measure.
The rule provides for exceptions, such as powdered milk and baby food, honey and special pet foods, with a limit of two pounds per person.
Fishery products (fresh or prepared) are authorized, with a limit of up to 20 kilos per person. And cakes, cookies, and candy are exempt.
“All products of animal origin that do not comply with these standards must be delivered upon arrival in the EU for official disposal”, under penalty of fine or legal action, according to European regulations.
After leaving the EU on January 31, 2020, the UK will leave the customs union and the European single market on December 31 at midnight, at the end of a transitional period during which European rules have been applied. .
