Today is an important date for 5G in Portugal! The migration process of the transmitters that make up the Digital Terrestrial Television Network (DTT), which broadcast in the 700 MHz band, has come to an end today.

In total, 243 frequency transmitters were changed throughout the country.

5G technology: 10 to 20 times faster than 4G

As of today, the 700 MHz band is fully released across the country, allowing it to be used for 5G deployment. The process that aims to attribute to the operators the respective rights of use of frequencies that should occur in the 1st quarter of 2021 remains to be concluded.

With the adoption of 5G, all citizens and companies will be able to benefit from high-speed Internet, even those in areas of low population density, even in autonomous communities, since the auction rules for the allocation of frequencies determine a coverage of 95% of the national territory in 2025, and 90% of the population of parishes and low-density parishes in the autonomous communities.

The process of migration to DTT, which began on February 7, had to be interrupted between March and August, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but apart from that stop, it has always been extremely normal. This process, in addition to allowing it to evolve to the 5th mobile generation, also meant an improvement in the reception conditions of the DTT signal via land, with an estimated increase in the coverage of the DTT network of around 2% of the population (92, 5% to 94.5%), reveals ANACOM.

ANACOM recalls that support for the purchase of satellite signal reception equipment will continue to exist until the end of 2023; get more information here.

Fifth generation technology thus brings a completely new reality: it will be able to support a thousand times more traffic than current networks and at a speed 10 to 20 times faster than 4G.
