Former Prime Minister and former President of the Republic, Cavaco Silva, criticizes the Government’s solution to help TAP. In an interview with “Observador”, the predecessor of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa doubts the State’s ability to manage a company the size of the airline, which competes globally with other aviation companies.
Asked about the statements of the Minister of Economy, Pedro Siza Vieira, who compared TAP with AutoEuropa, Cavaco Silva said that he did not agree “totally” with this. “There has been a lot of talk about this TAP restructuring program. I do not know if it is positive or not and I am convinced that no member of the government and no politician knows whether this government decision is positive or negative, “he said.
“Do you know why I also have doubts? Because I don’t see the state running a company that has international competition. Have you ever imagined AutoEuropa, which also competes internationally – in automobile production – to be run by the state? It is one thing for the state to manage public transport, or the metro, or the factory to produce euro banknotes at the Bank of Portugal. But a company that competes globally with other companies? “Adds the former president.
Cavaco Silva adds that the initial “error” dates back to 2016, when “the state that had only 36% wanted to keep 50% of TAP.”
“I’m not saying it’s an error of the same dimension as 35 hours, but now it’s just as bad as that. It was a big mistake. In fact, many citizens called on the Government to do so and I am well aware that the CP and the Left Bloc defended and put pressure on it. They are responsible for what is happening. Things would be very different today, very different if that decision had not been made in 2016. And, therefore, I already mentioned it, ”he says.
