Mandatory curfew on New Year’s Eve from 11 p.m. on the mainland

On New Year’s Eve, from December 31 to January 1, there will be a curfew from 11:00 p.m. and on January 1, 02 and 03 from 1:00 p.m., the Prime Minister announced this Thursday. Minister.

The measures apply to all municipalities in mainland Portugal.

The prohibition of circulation between municipalities between 00:00 hours on December 31 and 05:00 hours on January 4, “except for health reasons, urgent urgency or other specifically foreseen”, which had been announced 15 days ago, holds. remain unchanged.

On December 5, when the state of emergency that will be in force until the 23rd was announced, the Government had anticipated that on New Year’s night the curfew would be at 2:00 am and only for municipalities considered at risk extreme and very high transmission of the new coronavirus.

On January 1, the curfew in the counties with the highest risk of contagion would be at 11:00 p.m.

Today, at the end of the Council of Ministers in which the measures to contain the covid-19 pandemic for the holiday season were evaluated and adjusted, the Prime Minister admitted that, after Christmas, “there will necessarily be an increase in infections”, although there is confidence that families will avoid risky behavior at that time.

For this reason, he added, “Christmas will be protected with the sacrifice of the New Year.”

“Right after Christmas, we must adopt maximum containment measures to prevent the greater risk that Christmas gatherings will constitute from multiplying into exponential growth,” he said.

António Costa also recalled the measures to take into account in Christmas celebrations, such as gathering as few people as possible, being at the table for as long as necessary, avoiding closed and poorly ventilated spaces, and wearing a mask for as long as possible.

With the change of curfew on December 31 and January 1 and the weekend of January 2 and 3, there will also be changes in relation to what was announced for the restaurant hours.

Thus, throughout the continental territory, on the 31st the restaurants will have to close until 10:30 p.m. and on January 1, 2 and 3 until 1:00 p.m., “except for home deliveries”, as mentioned in the notice. of the Council of Ministers.

At Christmas, the measures already planned and announced for about two weeks are maintained, that is, circulation between municipalities will be allowed and on Christmas Eve and Christmas it will be possible to circulate on public roads until 2:00 am in municipalities at risk. high, very high and extreme contagion by the new coronavirus.

That is, in these municipalities, on December 24 and 25, the curfew, which in the last week was set at 23:00, will only be at 02:00.
