The President of the Government of Madeira confirmed today the existence of an outbreak of covid-19 in the Hospital dos Marmeleiros, in Funchal, with some 20 infected people, but stressed that the chain of transmission is “perfectly identified.”

“The chain is perfectly identified and, at this moment, we have the situation under test, under control,” said Miguel Albuquerque, indicating that two of the seven deaths from covid-19 registered in the archipelago are associated with this situation.

The minister intervened on the sidelines of the presentation of the book “History of Madeira. 20th century – The path to autonomy”, by Rui Carita, in Funchal, where he confirmed the information released today by Antena 1 about a covid-19 outbreak in Hospital dos Trees of Quince, already with about 20 infected, including four health professionals.

“We are following the chain, but there is no community transmission in Madeira”, said Miguel Albuquerque, reinforcing: “If there were community transmission, we would act immediately”.

The president of the executive, of the PSD / CDS-PP coalition, stressed that 40 active local transmission chains have been identified and warned of the possibility that the number of infected increases during the Christmas and New Year period.

“I have to be realistic: at this time, it is expected, due to the time we live and the attitudes that are normal for this time, the return of students, immigrants, greater coexistence, that these outbreaks increase,” he said.

And he stressed: “We have to keep them under control and that is what we are doing and, above all, we must be very careful with the elderly.”

Miguel Albuquerque recalled that the day centers, social centers and community centers in Madeira will close as of Friday for a period of 15 days and explained that the mobility of professionals between nursing homes will be progressively reduced.

“It is not easy, because we do not have enough personnel to do it, but we are beginning the process, in the sense of giving greater guarantees and greater security to the people who are at home,” he said.

According to the most recent data, the Autonomous Region of Madeira reports 321 active infections, also registering seven deaths associated with the new coronavirus.

The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,649,927 deaths as a result of more than 74.1 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 5,815 people died out of 358,296 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate General of Health.
