The President of the Republic sent to Parliament, this Wednesday, a new decree proposing the renewal of the state of emergency until January 7.

“After listening to the Government, which delivered a favorable pronouncement tonight, the President of the Republic has just sent to the Assembly of the Republic, for authorization, the draft diploma renewing, for a period of 15 days, until the 7 January 2021, the state of emergency for the entire national territory, allowing the Government to carry out the measures for this new period ”, reads a note published on the website of the presidency.

The renewal of the state of emergency will last 15 days, beginning at 00:00 hours on December 24, 2020 and ending at 23:59 hours on January 7, 2021, “without prejudice to possible renewals, in the terms of the law “, explains the third point of the decree, which, as usual, lists partially suspended rights.

It should be noted for the fact that this new decree provides for the crime of disobedience, for those who fail to comply with the standards adopted in the context of containing the covid-19 pandemic.

“Violation of the provisions of the declaration of the state of emergency, even in its execution, incurs the crime of disobedience to the respective authors,” the document reads.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also reported that, contrary to what happened in the previous renewals, this time he will not speak with the country about the new state of emergency, since he has already formalized his re-application for the position of President of the Republic.
