João Ataíde, coordinator of the Inspection Office of the Immigration and Border Service (SEF) resigned this Tuesday after the case of a Ukrainian citizen, Ihor Homeniuk, on March 12 at the facilities of that criminal police force at Lisbon airport, said the Jornal de Notícias.

The resignation of João Ataíde comes after the intervention of Eduardo Cabrita, Minister of Internal Administration, in the Assembly of the Republic. The government official admitted that the coordinator and 12 other inspectors are being investigated in a disciplinary process on the circumstances that led to the death of Ihor Homeniuk.

YES F. Cabrita admits “mistakes” but stays (and announces reform for January)

Four days after his death, the Prosecutor’s Office issued an opinion in which it stated that, taking into account the video surveillance images, the service “found no evidence of aggression and mistreatment of this citizen.” The document, which Cabrita considered “extremely serious”, was signed by João Ataíde.

This is the fourth dismissal within the Foreign and Border Service since the Ihor Homeniuk case was made public. Cristina Gatões, national director of the SEF, resigned last Wednesday. Sérgio Henriques and Amílcar Vicente, director and deputy director of Fronteiras de Lisboa, left on March 30.
