António Costa ruled out this Tuesday, December 15, the possibility of a merger between the Public Security Police (PSP) and the Foreign and Origin Services (SEF).

“As for the reform of the police system, this is a job that is going to be done. No final decisions are being made at this time. There is a general guideline that has been defined, which certainly does not involve police mergers or scenarios of this type, ”said the prime minister, in a statement made at the São Bento Palace in Lisbon.

António Costa stressed that in the coming weeks what is foreseen in the Government’s program is being developed, which “foresees a very clear separation, between what are the police functions of the border police, of the administrative dimension of the relationship with foreigners who reside like us in Portugal ”.

It is recalled that on Monday, the national director of the Security Police, Magina da Silva, was working on a merger between the two entities. The idea was transmitted after a meeting with the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

“What has been announced and has been worked on with the Ministry of the Interior will not go through absorption, but through the merger between PSP and SEF,” said Magina da Silva, who said that “he proposed, very directly,” and who discussed the issue. “With the President”, that the PSP be shut down and the SEF extinguished.
