Portugal added 2,638 more positive cases of covid-19 in the last 24 hours, during which 84 people died.
Portugal recorded 84 more deaths from covid-19 this Tuesday, the lowest number in the past seven days, and the total number of deaths now rises to 5,733 since the start of the pandemic.
The 2,638 cases reported in the last 24 hours, a figure approximately equal to that of the previous two-thirds, the holidays of December 1 and 8, represent an increase of almost 500 compared to Monday, a day traditionally with fewer registrations.
Even so, it is one of the lowest records in December, which accumulates, in the first 15 days, more than 55 thousand infections, a third of the total of November, black November, which ended with 156 infections and almost two thousand deaths.
The last 24 hours, according to the daily bulletin of the Directorate General of Health (DGS), seem to be a relief from the pandemic in Portugal. There are fewer hospitalized, less infected, more recovered and fewer people under surveillance.
According to the latest figures, there are 3,207 fewer active cases of covid-19, and the total fell from 71,012 on Monday to 67,805 this Tuesday, the lowest number of infected since November 6.
Over 5761 people were considered to have recovered from the disease (280038 in total), while contacts under DGS surveillance were also reduced by 2151, to a total of 74.572.
Fewer patients in hospitals
In one day of breaks, it is also worth noting the decrease in the number of patients in the hospital, after two days of substantial increases. According to the most recent data from the DGS, there are now 3206 hospitalized patients, 48 fewer and 506 people in intensive care units, seven fewer than on Monday.
The death registry, the lowest in the last seven days, points to 84 deaths, 57 (24 men and 33 women) among the elderly, which is equivalent to 67% of the national daily total, a percentage identical to the global one.
The age group 70 to 79 lost 20 lives, 13 men and seven women, representing almost 24% of the daily total, a record slightly below the world average of 20%.
Among citizens younger than 70 and older than 60, six deaths (three of each gender) were reported, while the immediately preceding age group, 50-59, noted the loss of a man.
The lethality of covid-19 was particularly aggressive in the North, with 36 lives taken in the last 24 hours (42% of the daily total), seven more than yesterday’s 29, in a record that already contains 2,724 names since the beginning of the pandemic. Since December 1, there have been 585 deaths in the northernmost part of the country.
In the center there were also fewer deaths on Tuesday, 18 after Monday 24. The cumulative number of lives lost in this part of the country now stands at 794, of which 24 this month.
In the RLVT, 26 more deaths were reported, bringing the monthly total to 365, while the cumulative number of deaths since the start of the pandemic is now 1977.
The Alentejo added the twelfth consecutive day to the record of deaths associated with covid-19, three today, as many as yesterday, in a month in which it has already lost 35 lives, 151 since the start of the pandemic.
On a day when death returned to Madeira, there are now three deaths associated with the disease in the “Pearl of the Atlantic”, no deaths were recorded in the Azores (the same 20 as three days ago) or in the Algarve, which is adds to the second day without deaths (61 since the start of the pandemic).
The North Region goes up again and Lisbon and the Tagus Valley go down again
The Northern Region, the most marked by the presence of covid-19, registered 1,348 more positive cases in the last 24 hours, a day after having lowered the threshold of 1,000 daily infections for the first time since October 19. A record, however, this Tuesday, lower than the 1,584 patients referred a week ago.
With the month in between, RN has registered, so far, 28,398 positive cases of covid-19, which is equivalent to 51% of the national total in the first 15 days of December.
The Lisbon Region and the Tagus Valley represent around 30% of the total monthly accumulated cases, with a record of 16030 infections since the beginning of the month, to which the 682 registered in the last 24 hours contributed, the lowest record since November 17, second consecutive day below 1,000 daily cases.
In the Central Region, the 436 cases registered this Tuesday represent an increase compared to the 255 on Monday, but, even so, it is a number below the maximum of this month, registered last week, with more than 700 cases. The accumulated of the month in the CR goes in 7,631 cases, about 14% of the national total in the first 15 days of December.
Further south, Alentejo recorded a drop in the number of cases for the second day in a row, moving away from the highest numbers recorded last week. With 59 infections, the region south of the Tagus totaled 1,907 covid-19 cases this month, about 3% of the national total since day 1.
The Algarve fell below 60 cases, after five consecutive days with figures in that order of magnitude, falling to 42 infections registered in the last 24 hours. The total for the month is 948, around 1.7% of the national accumulated in the first 15 days of December.
On the islands, the Azores saw the number of cases drop from Monday’s peak of 62 to 44, still the second-worst record in more than a month. Figures that come out of the Azorean archipelago with a monthly accumulated of 419 infections, equivalent to 0.75% of the total since the beginning of the month.
In Madeira, there was a slight increase, from 24 to 27 cases. In a month marked by fluctuations in the number of cases, the archipelago of Madeira registered a total of 219 infections, around 0.4%. of the national total since December 1.
