Portugal on the Swiss red list ″ not justified ″, says Secretary of State

The Secretary of State for the Portuguese Communities considers that Switzerland does not have to include Portugal on a red list, which as of this Monday requires quarantine upon return, and guarantees that it is trying to change the situation.

“This decision was made at a time when Portugal was at the peak of the second wave. It is no longer justified, because we have fewer new cases per 100,000 inhabitants than Switzerland and Switzerland’s criterion is to put countries with more cases than Switzerland for every 100,000 inhabitants, ”said Berta Nunes.

Speaking to the Lusa agency, the minister revealed that she has received several complaints from Portuguese who do not accept the measure, some of whom have already signed a petition for Portugal to abandon this red list, which gathered 11,878 signatures on Monday.

“We have developed contacts with the Swiss authorities, with our ambassador in Switzerland, who has kept us informed of the situation, and here at the ministry [dos Negócios Estrangeiros] we are developing contacts so that Switzerland can remove Portugal from that red list, because it is not justified ”, he said.

According to Berta Nunes, Switzerland has not yet responded to the Portuguese complaints, but the reason that led the country to include Portugal on the list is not up to date.

This is because the Swiss decision was made “when Portugal was at the top of this second wave,” he said.

“We have been declining and we are in a situation in which we have fewer cases than Switzerland for every 100,000 inhabitants,” he reiterated.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Portugal has registered 5,694 deaths and 350,938 cases of infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, with 71,012 active on Monday, 851 cases less than on Sunday.

Official data shows that this is the lowest number of new cases in a single day since October 20, when 1876 were recorded.

Still without a response from the Swiss Confederation are the authors of the petition that seeks to stop this mandatory quarantine for those who return to Switzerland from Portugal.

The petition was launched on the social network Facebook, on the page “Emigrate to Switzerland”, and demands that Portugal be removed from the list of countries considered at high risk of contagion by the new coronavirus.

As of this Monday, all Portuguese traveling to the country of origin must be in quarantine for 10 days after their return to Swiss territory.
