David Neeleman, until recently a TAP shareholder together with Humberto Pedrosa, says that “no legal or other action against the Portuguese State has been and will not be initiated, that the preparation of said action is not in progress” and that no instructions to lawyers to “study that possibility.”

The businessman’s statement, in writing, follows a request for clarification from the PUBLIC, following a news item from the Sun indicating that Neeleman was preparing a request for compensation from the State for TAP, through a civil action.

Neeleman’s departure from TAP took place in early October and the businessman, in association with Azul, received 55 million euros. This amount corresponds to ancillary fees linked to TAP that remained with the State (which increased its participation in the capital to 72.5%).

The agreement signed between the two parties has a clause that avoids future litigation. With the departure of the entrepreneur, the Atlantic Gateway consortium ended, with Humberto Pedrosa holding a direct 22.5% stake in the company.

This Friday, at a press conference, the Minister of Infrastructure, Pedro Nuno Santos, affirmed that the former shareholder had the right to complementary payments in the amount of 224 million. Thus, after receiving 55 million from the State for his 22.5% position, Neeleman “agreed to lose 169 million euros,” according to the supervising minister. According to Pedro Nuno Santos, the businessman “had neither money nor will” to invest capital in TAP.
