2000 workers were identified that will not be needed for the TAP Group between 2021 and 2022 ”, but a progressive salary cut of up to 25% will also be applied to the company. This last measure, in turn, “saves between 600 and a thousand jobs, which are preserved because the wage bill is reduced,” said the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, in the presentation on Friday. of the TAP Restructuring Plan, admitting that it is still necessary “to suspend the company agreements in TAP, because the company is less productive than its competitors.”

“We have more crew members than international standards, especially in the case of A321 and A319 aircraft, for which four crew members are used, but at TASP we have five. In other words, we have 28% more crew per plane than our competitors, ”said the official.

“We have a longer rest period, so we need more drivers to produce the same. We have to correct these conditions in front of our competitors, to save TAP and to be able to make TAP grow more vigorously in the future ”, he explained.

This restructuring will allow “to accumulate savings of 1,400 million euros in public money until 2025. In this sense, voluntary measures were presented to the unions that can reduce the number of exits, including early retirements and unpaid leave, which are alternatives to dismissal “, revealed Pedro Nuno Santos, considering that this restructuring has to be done with success. because, he says, “it was tremendously negative and disastrous for the Portuguese economy to lose TAP, which in 2019 represented about 2,600 million exports, plus 700 million euros in sales to national citizens”.

“If all the air connections made by TAP were occupied by competing companies, the respective value of our exports would go to zero, which means that those 2,600 million euros would no longer be exports,” the minister concluded.
