Boris Johnson warns businesses and citizens to prepare for Brexit without a deal – Europe

The British prime minister said Thursday that there is “a strong possibility” that Britain and the European Union will not reach a post-Brexit deal and has warned British businesses and citizens to prepare for this scenario.

“Now there is a strong possibility that we have a solution very similar to Australia’s relationship with the EU, rather than a relationship like Canada with the United States,” Boris Johnson said in a joint television interview. “We have not suspended the talks, we will continue negotiating. But, seeing where we are, I think it is vital that everyone is prepared for the ‘Australian option’,” he added.

The British prime minister stressed that London is committed, but not at any cost, to an agreement, admitting the possibility of going to Paris or Berlin until the negotiations are concluded.

The statements come after Wednesday’s dinner with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in which a new deadline (the fourth of this negotiation process) was set for next Sunday.

The absence of a joint statement after the Johnson-Leyen meeting is a negative sign, although a new deadline has been set. The differences between the two parties center on three issues: level playing field, governance and fisheries.

Meanwhile, this Thursday, the European Commission released contingency plans for a no-deal post-Brexit.
