This Thursday, Portugal registered 3,134 new cases and 86 deaths from covid-19. In total, more than 330,000 people have already been infected with the new coronavirus and 5,278 have died.
In the past 24 hours, another 4,848 people have recovered from the disease. In hospitals there are less than 28 patients in the ward (there are 3304), but there are more serious cases, with 509 people admitted to intensive care units. In total, there are 7038 active cases of covid-19 in Portugal, 1800 less than on Wednesday.
With 86 deaths in 24 hours, this Thursday is the fourth day with the most fatalities since the beginning of the pandemic, only surpassed by 91 deaths on November 16 and 87 on November 18 and December 6. four days.
Contrary to what is customary, this Thursday the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (LVT) is the most penalized by the lethality of the disease, with 37 deaths registered in the last 24 hours. In all, about 1,831 lives were lost to the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
In the North, the area of the country most affected by covid-19, 32 people died, with the accumulated number of deaths reaching 2,537. The Central Region, which was also hit by the first wave, continues to suffer a lot from the second wave, accumulates another 14 deaths, for a total of 697.
The islands did not add any deaths in the last 24 hours, on a day in which the Alentejo accumulated two more deaths (136 in total), while the Algarve lost another life due to covid-19, bringing the total to 56 .
Thursday with fewer cases in almost two months
The 3,134 cases of covid-19 registered this Thursday represent a decrease of 963 infections compared to Wednesday and are, in addition, a lower value (in 638) than the 3772 of last Thursday.
This is the second consecutive Thursday with less than six thousand cases, after a month of registrations on the penultimate business day of each week, among which is the maximum registered, 6994, on November 19. This is also the day with the fewest cases since October 15, almost two months ago, when the 2101 infections were nothing less than the second-worst record to date.
Almost two months after the barrier of two thousand cases a day was crossed (on October 14, with 2072), the figures are above three thousand cases a day, 1371 of which in the Northern Region, in the last 24 hours, cumulative increase 175983.
The second wave continues to hit hard also in the Central Region, which registered 697 more infections in the last 24 hours, for a total of 34,571 since the start of the pandemic, on March 2.
The most populated region in the country, LVT, is the second most affected in terms of deaths (1,831) and cases, with a total of 109,017, which already accounted for 964 cases in the last 24 hours.
In a period of time when all regions registered fewer cases at the end of the day, from Wednesday to Thursday, Alentejo was the exception: 267 more infections, for a total of 7,420, roughly double the 134 yesterday.
Further south, the Algarve recorded 55 cases (one less than Wednesday), with a total of 5,949.
On the islands, there are 19 more cases in the Azores (1,254 in total), while Madeira (with six more notifications) now has 1,013 covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic.
More than 70% of deaths in the age group above 80 years
Of the 86 deaths registered in the last 24 hours, 44 were men and 42 women. As is characteristic of this disease, the elderly are the most affected: 73% of all deaths in the last 24 hours, 63 people (35 men and 28 women), were over 80 years old. Worldwide, since the start of the pandemic, 67% of the dead were in the most advanced stage of life.
The immediately preceding age group, 70 to 79 years, lost 17 lives in the last 24 hours (six men and 11 women), that is, 20% of the total deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, which is consistent with the global percentage, since the first death, on March 16.
There are also six more deaths to be registered in the last 24 hours, four in the age group 60-69 years (two men and two women), 4% of the daily total in a range that represents, in general, 8% of the total. total deaths, and two deaths, a man and a woman, aged 50 to 59, a figure consistent with the usual statistics: equivalent to 2% of total daily deaths, a figure identical to the total figures.
