The Minister of the Environment assured this Wednesday that he was aware of the Metro do Porto report, which includes 11 axes translated into seven new lines, pointing to a “10-year project, to be completed in 10 years.”

“I already know the study and I know it well,” said João Pedro Matos Fernandes, on the sidelines of the signing of a protocol between the guardianship and CEiiA, in Matosinhos, when journalists confronted him with the fact that it is scheduled for this Wednesday . Delivery of the final report on the expansion of the Porto Metro, in a ceremony that has been canceled in the meantime.

The Minister of Environment and Energy Transition said that the two lines included in the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) will be completed before the end of 2025, in reference to the metro bus to the western area of the city of Porto and the so-called second Vila Nova de Gaia line (Santo Ovídio-Devesas-Campo Alegre).

“Many others will start work before this year. I have no doubts. But this is a 10-year project that will be completed in 10 years,” said the government official.

This is the final report of the new metro lines, which includes 11 metro lines that are reflected in seven new lines.

As for the corridor to the western part of the city of Porto, Matos Fernandes said on Wednesday that “it is easy to build” because “it does not have an environmental impact assessment”, pointing to the date of the 2021 contest.

Regarding the new line for Gaia, with a new bridge over the Duero, he recalled that the ideas contest will be launched in February and has assured that this company requires an impact study.

“The bridge is the key and most complex element: between an Eiffel bridge [referindo-se à Luís I] and Edgar Cardoso [ponte da Arrábida]. It cannot be just any bridge. It has to be a bridge that ennobles the river front and the cities of Porto and Gaia, but I want to believe that there are conditions to also launch the tender for the construction of the new line for the Devesas ”, said Matos Fernandes.

This study includes lines for municipalities such as Maia and Gondomar, as well as the solution of a metro transport service to Trofa, a project that Matoso Fernandes said “will be implemented over the next decade.”

“Objectively, after an injustice that was committed, there was no demand to justify the subway line so we could not be asked to make a subway line where there are no passengers that justify it, but justify a BRT”. [metrobus], a system in its own corridor with electric buses, “he said, highlighting that” the choice of lines is from the Metropolitan Area of Porto.
