The Diocese of Aveiro mourns the death of João Gonçalves, the “priest of prisons”

Today, at the age of 76, the victim of a prolonged illness, Father João Gonçalves, who presided over the Private Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS) Florinhas do Vouga, died, among other tasks that he was in charge of in the Diocese of Aveiro.

The clergyman born on March 28, 1944 was also, for several years, national coordinator of the Penitentiary Ministry, having been awarded, in 2019, with the ‘People of Peace and Justice’ award, which was awarded to him during the international meeting of ‘Causes and values ​​of humanity’.

Father João Gonçalves passed away a few days after his 51st birthday as a priest (12/21/1969). He was ordained a priest in Gafanha do Carmo, municipality of Ílhavo, his native land. The funeral is scheduled for next Thursday.
