A South Australian surfer was badly bitten by a shark on a remote beach, but managed to escape and swim ashore alone, walking another 300 meters until he was able to call for help.
The incident occurred this Sunday in the Bay of D’Estrees on Kangaroo Island. The 29-year-old was surfing when he was surprised and struck by the shark.
“It was like being run over by a truck,” the victim later explained, in a handwritten note at the hospital posted on social media.
“I was sitting on my board when I felt a blow to my left side. It bit me in the area of the back, buttocks and elbow and tore off a piece of the board. I saw the shark at a glance when it released us and disappeared,” he says.
He then swam to shore and walked 300 meters to the parking lot, where he met another surfer whom he asked for help. They met the ambulance and rescuers midway.
According to paramedic Michael Rushby, who treated him, reporters said the surfer sustained severe cuts to his back, buttocks and one leg, “consistent with a large shark bite,” but managed to escape to safety. An “extraordinary” story of survival, he notes.
The victim was always conscious during the performance of the paramedics. “We stabilize him on the street, treat injuries and pain,” explained Michael Rushby. Later, the surfer was taken to the hospital.
