Speaking to the country, Prime Minister António Costa was pleased with the renewal of the state of emergency for another 15 days, noting that the “evolution of the pandemic clearly shows that the measures that have been adopted have produced effects.”

Thus, the Prime Minister hopes that the state of emergency “is renewed until January 7, in order to have a stable and predictable framework for how we should live our life during the next month.”

“We, from the end of September to mid-November, had a constant increase in new cases and a positive variation in new cases per week, and the truth is that since mid-November we are experiencing a decrease in new cases per day and a decrease significant number of new cases per week, ”said António Costa.

Thus, “there is a clear correlation between this evolution and the fact that the state of calamity was decreed on October 15 and then a more pronounced decline with a correlation for having decreed, in the last month, the state of emergency” , said.

The decrease in new cases has also led to the risk of transmissibility, “the famous R”, being below 1%, currently standing at 0.96%. However, the Prime Minister pointed out that “despite the positive evolution, we continue to have a very high number of patients hospitalized in intensive care, also very high and, unfortunately, a very high number of deaths”.

For the figures to continue falling drastically, António Costa pointed out that “it is essential to maintain the measures” and that the measures continue to be adopted by the Portuguese.
