The City Council of Viana do Castelo today unanimously approved the award of the contract to convert the old bullring of the city into a sports campus for more than 3.6 million euros.

Municipal source said that the intervention should begin in the first quarter of 2021.

Today, in the presentation of that point on the agenda of the ordinary meeting of the municipal executive, the mayor of Viana do Castelo, José Maria Costa, explained that the work has been awarded to the Baltor company, for more than 3,669,123 ,10 euros.

The Socialist mayor said it was the lowest offer submitted to the public tender launched in January.

José Maria Costa said that two complaints were filed, but the team that evaluated the proposals chose the company that was awarded the contract today.

In January, the executive unanimously approved the opening of a second public tender for the conversion of the city’s old bullring into a sports ‘campus’, for more than 4.9 million euros.

In April 2018, the first public tender for said contract, with a base value of 3.5 million euros, was canceled because it was deserted.

The project for the requalification of the plaza and adjacent areas has an execution period of one year and a half.

The reconversion of the old bullring, deactivated since 2009, the year in which the city declared itself anti-bullfighting, is part of the Strategic Plan for Urban Development (PEDU), which requests community funds from Portugal 2020.

In September 2019, the municipal executive had already unanimously approved the “practically complete” demolition of the old bullring, considering it the “technically and economically viable option” for the conversion of the property into a sports ‘campus’.

“There is a need to re-functionalize the building and both the geometry and the construction system pose limitations. We will keep the memorial reference of the property, but we will create the conditions to make partial adjustments, demolishing when necessary ”, explained, on the occasion, the councilor for Urban Planning, Urban Planning, Economic Development, Mobility and Territorial Cohesion, Luís Nobre.

The intention of the municipality is to transform the old arena, with an area of 3,800 square meters and about 65 meters in diameter, into a multifunctional structure, at the service of sports and the youth of the municipality, capable of practicing several modalities simultaneously, such as gymnastics, fencing , figure skating, roller hockey and basketball.

The future “Praça Viana” will be managed by the Escola Desportiva de Viana (EDV), on credit, providing the association with suitable conditions for the innumerable modalities and for the training of the young people of the municipality ”.
