The restaurant businessmen are going to end their hunger strike that had been going on for seven days. The decision was made after the mayor of Lisbon received Ljubomir Stanisic and José Gouveia, representatives of the “A Pão e Água” movement and two of the strikers who had no food at the Assembly of the Republic.

After the meeting, the businessmen made the decision to end the protest. “It was a joint decision. We expect things to improve, ”José Gouveia tells Expresso.

“Several ideas were discussed” and measures were presented, “some of which” were in agreement with the mayor of Lisbon, said Ljubomir Stanisic after leaving the meeting with Fernando Medina.

According to the two elements of the “A Pão e Água” movement, a new meeting was scheduled for next week.

“We felt that they understood our demands,” José Gouveia also told Expresso, adding that the mayor of Lisbon spoke with the Minister of Economy and Pedro Siza Vieira “also agreed that there were points [nas medidas do Governo] in need of change ”.

For journalists, Fernando Medina considered that it was “a very frank, face-to-face meeting”, which aimed to “find answers.” “We are all few at this time to try to resolve the painful situation” that the country is going through, he said, stressing that it is necessary “not to lose the sense of humanity.”

The strikers demanded to be heard by the Government on their proposals to mitigate the effects of the covid-19 pandemic.
