Apple faces a million-dollar fine for the water resistance of the iPhone

The American Apple is again embroiled in controversies over its marketing practices. The question is how the company classifies its iPhone as waterproof.

The Italian competition authority decided to fine Apple for 10 million euros because of this issue. A decision that American technology is reluctant to make statements to, at least for now.

Apple accused of aggressive and deceptive marketing

In the document published by the Italian regulatory authority, the latter classifies the way Apple advertises water resistance on its iPhone as “aggressive and misleading.” The technology allegedly does not clarify under what circumstances these conditions apply.

These charges come after several reports in which Apple refused to provide technical support for liquid-damaged devices. The different ways of interpreting intellectual property certifications are at the center of many controversies that involve companies and users.

The document of the Italian entity criticizes Apple’s liability exemptions in these cases. There are cases in which the company does not cover liquid damaged equipment and subsequent technical support excuse, which is perceived as misleading to consumers.

In fact, this is a delicate subject and open to various interpretations. It can be read in terms of IP certifications that approved equipment can be submerged for a certain period of time, down to a certain depth.

Sometimes these events go well for users, but it is when something less good happens that the controversy begins. Many are the cases in which companies report misuse of equipment in order not to provide assistance.

This fine directed at Apple puts the issue back on the agenda. We will see if the American accepts the sanction or if it defends itself to get rid of another millionaire fine.
