Arrifana firefighters rescued a 60-year-old man alive this Monday afternoon who fell into a 25-meter deep well in Romariz, Santa Maria da Feira. The victim is said to have stepped on the cement deck he was given.

“Help, help, help that fell into the well,” the landowner shouted desperately, where the man he had hired to cut some small eucalyptus trees fell.

Requests for help, while running down Rua Padre Castro, were heard by Aurélia Mota, a resident of another place that was close to shopping.

The well, about 25 meters deep, flanked by small hanging stones and filled with water, feared a tragic outcome. “I heard the lady in distress say that the man had fallen and went to ask a house for a rope,” the witness recalled.

“I spoke to him to see if he was conscious and threw the rope on him.” However, “the rope did not reach the bottom and he told me to tie it to another that was on the tractor.” Seconds later, Aurélia Mota managed to bring the rope closer to the man who felt more secure, despite not being able to get out of that depth.

Upon arrival at the scene, the Arrifana firefighters mounted the rescue operation: one of the operations descended on the victim, who, after being duly assessed and prepared for the rescue, was hauled to the surface.

Despite being shaken by the fall – he suffered some abrasions and was hypothermic – the victim began by refusing to go to the hospital. Only at great cost was he persuaded to go to the hospital for a medical evaluation.

“If it weren’t for the firefighters and his luck, he wouldn’t get away with it,” said a neighbor, among a dozen neighbors who were incredulous when they saw the man go to the ambulance and refuse to help.

Arrifana firefighters worked on the incident with six operatives and two vehicles. GNR took care of the occurrence.
