After a closed-door meeting that lasted an hour and a half, Luísa Araújo, a member of the PCP’s national secretariat, announced to journalists that the new central committee was elected with 98.5 percent of the vote.


Of the 611 delegates, 602 voted in favor, six abstained and three voted against in the election that took place on the second day of the XXI Congress of the PCP, which takes place in Loures.

The list, proposed by the previous central committee, is made up of 129 names, 19 of them newcomers, of which 33 members come out, including former deputy Agostinho Lopes, 76, former CGTP leader Arménio Carlos, 65 years. and Carlos Carvalhas, 79, predecessor of Jerónimo de Sousa.

According to Luísa Araújo, the composition “corresponds to the characteristics of the PCP, it is made up of a majority of workers and employees, more than 67 percent” and there is also “a strong component of workers, 44.9 percent.” Four years ago, the central committee was elected with 98.67% of the votes.

This new central committee will meet this afternoon to elect the secretariat, the political commission and the general secretary. The names will be announced on Sunday morning, the third and last day of the Congress.

Although there is still no decision, everything indicates that Jerónimo de Sousa, 73, will be re-elected for a new four-year term as secretary general of the PCP.
