Covid-19: Intensive Care Admissions Doubled in the Last Month | COVID-19

This Saturday, Portugal reached a new high in the number of people in intensive care units, an increase of more than 100% in the last month. According to the latest epidemiological bulletin from the General Health Directorate (DGS) -which on Friday reports an increase of three patients- there are already 529 people admitted to these units. If we look at October 28, exactly a month ago, there were 262 patients who needed this care, a figure that represents an increase of 102% this Saturday.


On Friday, Portugal registered 4,868 new cases of covid-19 infection and 87 deaths caused by the virus. The number of cases represents a decrease compared to the last epidemiological bulletin of the General Health Directorate, where 5,444 cases were registered. In the number of deaths, however, there was an increase, as there were 67 deaths from the new coronavirus on Thursday. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 4,363 deaths caused by the virus.


There is also a reduction in the number of people hospitalized. This Saturday there are 3,155 people hospitalized, 53 less than in the last balance of the health authorities.


As for those recovered, there are already 206,275 since the start of the pandemic, 6,829 more than the last day.


Regarding the geographical distribution of the new cases, the North region concentrates the majority of these infections: there are 2,496, 51.3% of the total, in which it is the region with the highest number of cases and deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.


The Center represents 775 infections (15.9%) and in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo the health authorities detected 1,313 cases (27%). The Alentejo, with 127 cases (2.6%) and the Algarve, with 94 infections (1.9%), closed the count in continental Portugal. There were no deaths on the islands, Madeira registered 24 new cases and the Azores 39.


More men died than women with the virus: according to the DGS, 2,268 deaths were men and the remaining 2,095 women. In terms of age distribution, 67% of deaths occurred in people aged 80 years or older, in the age group with the highest mortality.
