There was light! The Christmas lights of Coimbra were turned on today, at the end of the afternoon, by Manuel Machado, mayor of the city, who at this symbolic moment made a point of exhorting: “charge all energy batteries to resist the difficulties we face today.”

“There is no need to be afraid … together we can overcome the crisis, the evil one, the pandemic, the wicked and all the others, for democracy,” the mayor of Conimbricense guaranteed in the middle of Praça 8 de Maio.

Before ending the brief conversation with journalists, Manuel Machado insisted on sending “that hug” and wishing “a good year for everyone.”

All statements in the Direct NDC video:

This year there are 420 thousand lights that illuminate the city during the Christmas season, making it more attractive, inviting you to stroll through the illuminated places, which are mainly focused on shops and restaurants, in order to create an extra attraction to support a sector that has been most affected by the pandemic.

It should be remembered that the municipality of Coimbra has decided to cancel the rest of the initiatives that are usually part of the Christmas program, since the beginning of the lighting concert, and part of this investment is now channeled to the support program for citizens affected by the pandemic of COVID. 19 and local businesses.
