The North American multinational BorgWarner, of automotive components, will invest seven million euros in 2021 in the expansion of the factory of the Lanheses business park, in Viana do Castelo, creating 38 new jobs, it was announced today.

The multinational settled in the capital of Alto Minho in 2014, in an investment of 25 million euros and at that time it estimated to create 500 jobs, but currently employs 966 workers.

Today, in the Chamber of Viana do Castelo, the new investment contract was signed and, at a press conference, Hugo Silva, from BorgWarner, explained that the expansion “is the result of the potential increase in business volume expected for the next few years” .

“The project contemplates an investment of the order of seven million euros and includes an increase in the productive area by 5,800 square meters,” said the official, who read a written statement and declined to answer questions from journalists.

Hugo Silva informed that the stock market clarifications on this investment would have to be made in writing and that they would be answered “a posteriori”.

Hugo Silva clarified only that the expansion plan will be carried out during the year 2021.

The mayor of Viana do Castelo said that expansion works will begin in early 2021, with the creation of an estimated 38 new jobs.

“This investment will generate more savings and more jobs and will help the region and the country to increase exports since it is a very exporting company,” he said.

According to José Maria Costa, the companies of the automobile cluster installed in the Lanheses business park employ some 3,000 workers.

The socialist mayor added that, in the three commercial areas of the municipality (Lanheses, São Romão do Neiva and Alvarães), nine companies from the automotive sector are installed.

In 2014, the incentives granted by the Chamber of Viana do Castelo prevented the departure of the North American multinational BorgWarner, from Portugal, from settling in the neighboring municipality of Valença.

At that time, the multinational benefited from a set of infrastructure fee exemptions, support for land acquisition and monitoring of licensing processes, among other measures.

The autarky also hired a specialized office, for 40 thousand euros, to provide technical support to the multinational in the construction of the new factory.

The group is a world leader in clean technology products and efficiency solutions for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles. With factories and technical facilities at 99 locations in 24 countries, the company employs about 48,000 people.
