Residents of the Austrian village of Fucking decided to change the town’s name to Fugging in hopes of escaping overwhelming interest from internet users, the local city council report said on Thursday.
“The City Council decided to change the name from Fucking to Fugging as of January 1 [de 2021]”wrote in the minutes dated Monday, Andrea Holzner, the conservative president of Tarsdorf, a commune to which the town is administratively linked, in Upper Austria, 350 kilometers east of Vienna.
For many years, visitors posed for photography in front of local posters, whose name is synonymous with an insult in English, sometimes in positions with sexual overtones, in order to feed social media with ironic puns.
As of Monday, the town did not have a clear majority to change the name of the village.
According to reports from the France-Presse (AFP) news agency, neighbors close to the local identification signs were in favor of changing the name, but most were against.
Fucking, with about 150 inhabitants (two thirds are women), it is close to the border with Bavaria (Germany) and close to Salzburg.
