The body of Diego Armando Maradona was removed from the presidential palace shortly before 6 pm in Buenos Aires (9 pm in mainland Portugal), with a hearse traveling through some streets of Buenos Aires towards the Bella Vista cemetery, which is located 47 kilometres. Argentina’s capital.
The doors of Casa Rosada opened at 7 a.m. on Thursday so that thousands of fans of the world soccer legend could say goodbye. However, since the family wished to hold the funeral after 4 p.m., the time turned out to be extremely short to allow all those who waited for hours in the lines to enter the wake location so that they could pay their last tribute to the idol.
The 1986 World Champion’s family still agreed to extend the ceremonies for another three hours, but the crowd began to realize that they would not be enough for everyone in lines of more than three kilometers. There were several clashes with the police, military intervention was required and finally public events were suspended.
At 6 in the afternoon, the hearse with the coffin of “El PIbe”, escorted by the police, left the presidential palace and crossed several streets of the capital towards the highway to proceed to the Jardin cemetery, in Bella Vista, for the exclusive final farewell for the family.
The thousands of fans who could not enter had the opportunity to say goodbye for the last time to the Argentine star as the vehicle passed through the streets surrounding the Casa Rosada. Not only in the capital the streets were filled, on the way to the cemetery many people came out to see the funeral procession pass.
But the general opinion was that the wake had been too short for a farewell on the scale of one of the greatest of all time.
