An American nurse posted on her Twitter account a photograph showing the marks left by the use of protective equipment on the faces of health professionals. He has worked for eight months in the covid-19 ward of a hospital in the state of Tennessee, in the United States.
Kathryn, 27, set out to post a before and after photo of her face. In the Twitter post you can see the differences between the photo when she completed her nursing course in April, and the photo after a twelve-hour shift. You can see the shape of the mask on the cheekbones, as well as the red marks on the nose. “I had the image of graduation in my head. I wanted to show the difference that a couple of months can make and the reality of being a nurse in the pandemic,” he reveals to the newspaper “Metro”.
The newly qualified nurse says she does not know the reality of practicing nursing under normal circumstances, since her first professional experience was dealing with patients infected by the new coronavirus. He says that the fact that he is working as a nurse has helped his mental state a lot, feeling that he can do something, when there are still many people looking at the virus as a joke.
“We are sitting there watching patients’ oxygen saturation drop and there is nothing else we can do. It is very difficult to know that these people were healthy before COVID-19, and now we have to watch them die. We had family members who died within weeks. , one after another, people who are young and who should not have died, ”he says.
Misinformation and conspiracy theories have affected the work of healthcare professionals, but every day Kathryn and her colleagues fight this misinformation about Covid-19. He believes things will only get worse with Thanksgiving and Christmas: “I resigned myself to the fact that things will be at their worst in a few weeks, but I just want it to happen now, so we can end this.”
The hospital where he works is already full and, therefore, the administrative space has recently been transformed to receive extra beds for infected patients. Tennessee has 339,000 infected people and has recorded more than 4,000 deaths. The United States already has 12 million cases with a total of 260 thousand deaths.
In the Twitter post, which already has 88,000 shares, Kathryn also makes an appeal: “Covid is a brutal disease and I do not wish it on my worst enemy. Please understand that you are not only protecting the people around you “.
