The XXIV Congress of Popular Youth, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, in Braga, was suspended and will be rescheduled 15 days after the lifting of the state of emergency, the organs of the structure that represent the young people of the CDS-PP decided today.

“At my request, the Popular Youth [JP] it brought together its organs and we reached the understanding of suspending the work of the congress, “the president told Lusa, arguing that” the logistical and political conditions for holding the congress were not met.

According to Francisco Mota, “a new date will be indicated up to 15 days after the lifting of the state of emergency” in the country.

The decision has already been communicated to the congressmen, by means of a note signed by the vice president of the conference table, Ricardo Machado Azevedo, by the president of the congress organizing committee, Francisco Kreye, and by the first subscriber of the dented global strategy “Responding al Futuro ”, and candidate to the director of JP, Francisco Camacho.

The leader of JP de Braga wants to postpone the congress scheduled for the end of November

“Faced with the urgency to find solutions to the emerging problem, the solution adopted seeks consensus among the subscribers, read by the bodies responsible for the congress, the organization of the congress and the first subscriber to the global strategy motion presented,” says the document.

On Sunday, the president of Juventud Popular announced that he had called a meeting of the bodies of that structure to discuss the postponement of Monday’s congress. The decision should have been made known at a press conference scheduled for this morning, but it did not happen because, at that time, the agreement had not yet been signed.

Francisco Mota explained that the congress will be suspended, and not postponed, because the postponement “would force the whole process to be repeated.”

The president also considered “natural that a process like this is not consensual”, and regretted that it was not accepted to include in the congressional regulations his proposal “for a paragraph that provided for postponement in case of worsening of the pandemic.

The note sent to the 321 registered delegates also indicates that, “upon suspension, all active members who meet the requirements on the date initially scheduled will be considered with active and passive electoral capacity.”

Francisco Mota said that the congress would be held in Braga, in a pavilion with capacity for 1,400 people and permanent cleaning, and that temperature measurement and rapid tests for the presence of the new coronavirus would be available.

Regarding the fact that, on Monday, the president of the CDS told the press that the JP congress would be postponed, Francisco Mota stressed that “it is up to the JP bodies to make the decision” and not to the party leader.

The president of JP pointed out that, according to the law of the state of emergency, the great meeting of that structure could take place, but rejected that the political activity be “benefited” while “there are severe restrictions for the Portuguese and for economic activities. . ”, Resulting from the declaration of the state of exception.

The country is in a state of emergency from November 9 to December 8, a period during which there is a mandatory curfew in counties with the highest risk of contagion.

Last week, the Interior Minister took for granted that the Assembly of the Republic will have to approve a second extension of the state of emergency as of December 9, and the President of the Republic stressed that he would not hesitate to propose “more renewals.” .

The legal regime of the state of siege and the state of emergency establishes that “the meetings of the statutory bodies of political parties, unions and professional associations shall in no case be prohibited, dissolved or subject to prior authorization.”
