The survey shows that a fifth of the students who live in the residences of the Aveiro Academy feel insecure.

The successive complaints that I had received, in recent weeks, regarding university residences, led the direction of the Academic Association of the University of Aveiro (AAUAv) to carry out a query, aimed at the students who live in them. The result, on the one hand, showed that 82.2% of university students like to live in homes, which are managed by the Social Action Services. On the other hand, he revealed that “a fifth of the students do not feel safe in their own accommodation” and that there are “residents of the Castro Complex who claim to be harassed by the guards.”

Of the approximately 800 students who live in the six residences at the University of Aveiro (UA), 293 responded to the survey. And there was some data that “worried” the AAUAv, namely those related to security and measures to contain the pandemic. “Although the majority of residents feel safe, 19.5% do not. It is a worrying information”, you can read in the survey report, which highlights that, “in Complexo Residencial do Crasto, some residents are feeling unsafe , mainly due to the harassment suffered by the guards / security guards ”, who have“ incorrect attitudes ”.

No complaints were recorded

Paulo Jorge Ferreira, dean of the UA, assured the JN that the situations of alleged harassment “are new data.” “As soon as I found out, I went to find out. And the truth is that there is no record of complaints in this area. But we will see what is happening,” he said.

As for cleanliness, only 10.6% of the students rated it negatively. Regarding the kitchen conditions, only 29% of the students gave a positive opinion. There were also complaints about the lack of disinfectant materials, such as alcohol gel. “Due to the pandemic, we strengthened the cleaning teams. And when it comes to disinfection materials, they are bought in large quantities and students know that it is enough to ask for them. I was generally satisfied with the results of the survey. Negative points, we must investigate and improve, of course ”, clarified Paulo Jorge Ferreira.
