Russia has opened a criminal case against Jehovah’s Witnesses in the country, accused of extremist activities.

This Tuesday, the Investigative Commission, in charge of investigating serious crimes, announced that a mega-operation was launched against the religious movement, with raids in Moscow and more than 20 regions.

At stake is the practice of “conspiracy meetings” in apartments, during which believers “study religious literature and propaganda information on the teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses” and recruit new members for the organization, write the Russian authorities in a statement cited by AFP. .

The operation has the collaboration of the Minister of the Interior, the Federal Security Service, the Russian National Guard (Rosgvardia).

Jehovah’s Witnesses have been officially considered an extremist group since 2017 in Russia, and several members have since been sentenced to prison.
