In proportion, the evolution scenario of the pandemic in Portugal is more worrying than in many of the countries most affected by Covid-19 at the European level. ECDC data released earlier this week, referring to the last 14 days (through November 23), shows that Portugal is one of the countries in Europe with the highest number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

In the last 14 days, Portugal registered, on average, 792.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a figure that is ahead of that registered by countries most harassed or where the pandemic has been evolving in a worrying way, like Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, United Kingdom or Belgium.

Ahead of Portugal, only seven other countries: Luxembourg, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Liechtenstein, Poland and Lithuania.

At the end of the table are islands or Nordic countries, specifically Norway, Ireland, Finland and Iceland, the latter with only 55.7 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants.

As for the deaths, Portugal falls some positions and is ranked 14th in number of deaths per 100,000 inhabitants (9.7 deaths). The Czech Republic leads the way on this specific point, followed by Belgium, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary and Italy.

Still so, Portugal is ahead of other countries where the pandemic has the most saturated health systems, such as the United Kingdom or neighboring Spain.

Looking at the map of Europe published Monday by the ECDC, it is possible to see the evolution of the pandemic by region. Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Belgium and northern Italy and southern France are home to the most affected regions, with more than 960.0 reported cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Outside this central area, the northern region of Portugal it is one of the few that achieves these values. In recent weeks, the North region has been the most harassed in the country in recent weeks, with the highest levels also registered in the most affected countries in Europe.

But the map reveals that the North region is also the one that presents, at this moment, the worst scenario in the entire Iberian Peninsula. with respect to the number of confirmed cases in proportion.

Of the remaining regions of Portugal, Lisbon and the Tagus Valley are the second most affected, with between 480 and 959.9 confirmed cases per 100,000 inhabitants, being at the same level as practically all regions of the Spanish territory, for example.

Looking north of Europe Highlight Finland, which had a residual evolution of the pandemic in the last 14 days, registering less than 20.0 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants in a large part of the territory.
