Portugal registered the eighth highest price of electricity in the European Union in the first half of this year (20 euros per 100 kilowatt hours), according to data published today by Eurostat.

The ranking is led by Germany (above 30 euros per 100 kWh), Denmark and Belgium (with prices above 25 euros per 100 kWh).

Between the first half of 2019 and 2020, average prices in the EU fell slightly from 21.6 euros per 100 kWh to 21.3 euros per 100 kWh.

The largest decreases were recorded in the Netherlands (-31%), Latvia (-12%) and Slovenia (11%), and Eurostat noted that the reduction in the tax burden was the main reason for the decreases in the Netherlands, with the cost of energy it will be the main factor of fall in the other two countries.

On the other hand, Lithuania (13%), Poland (12%) and Luxembourg (10%) registered the highest price increases, due to the increase in the cost of energy.

In the case of natural gas, Portugal has the ninth highest price in the EU: more than 6 euros per 100 kWh.

Portugal also recorded the fourth largest price drop between the first half of 2019 and 2020, minus 15.4%, a decrease second only to that of Latvia, Lithuania and Sweden. The drop in prices in Portugal was due to tax effects and lower energy costs.

In the Netherlands (8%), France (7%) and Croatia (5%) prices rose due to tax effects and the cost of energy.

The highest prices in the EU are found in the Netherlands (€ 10 per 100 kWh), Sweden (€ 9.8 per 100 kWh) and France (€ 7.9 per 100 kWh).
