“After the new restriction measures announced this Saturday by the Prime Minister, António Costa, the National Directorate of Chega decided to postpone the celebration of the National Council of the party that was scheduled for next November 29, in Sintra,” read a statement sent to the newsrooms.
In the note, the Chega board “understands that it is not possible to hold the National Council, because doing so would be a lack of respect for the millions of Portuguese who are forced to stay at home.”
In addition, at a time when “the Portuguese are prevented from enjoying the freedoms and guarantees enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, since the Government considers that this is the best way to combat contagion by covid-19” .
Despite the importance of the meeting in question, since it aims to discuss urgent issues about the internal life of the party, the National Directorate of Chega understands that, given the restrictions that will be in force next weekend, it is necessary to proceed. postponing the meeting, ”he continues.
Chega points out that he does not agree with the measures announced today by the Government but stresses that, “more than ever, he must be on the side of the Portuguese, putting in the background the resolution of internal affairs typical of the life of a party” .
In the statement, the party also challenges the PCP to postpone its congress, also scheduled for next weekend, claiming that, in this way, the communists would give “a proof of respect to all Portuguese and, in particular, to those who they suffer more because they are forced to close their businesses, thus compromising their survival ”.
According to a call published on its website, consulted today by Lusa, the Chega party, led by André Ventura, will meet, next Sunday, November 29, its National Council, a meeting that takes place at the same time as the PCP congress .

The summons, signed by the president of the board of directors of that body, Luís Filipe Graça, and meanwhile removed from the page, called “all national councilors by the National Council to be held on November 29, 2020.”
It was said that the meeting would take place at the facilities of the Volunteer Firefighters of Sintra (Lisbon district) and would begin at 15:30.
The information also indicated that the agenda would consist of three items: “information”, “analysis of the political situation” and, finally, “proposal and vote on the suspension of the president of the Faro District Political Commission.”
Today, in a statement, the Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Sintra indicated today that it had not received “any contact” from Chega for the celebration of the National Council.
The National Council of Chega, a deliberative body between conventions (equivalent to a congress), is “responsible for monitoring the political strategy of the party defined in the National Convention, as well as for the political control of the activities of the party’s national organs” .
The party’s statutes establish that “the National Council usually meets every four months and, in extraordinary session, at the request of the National Directorate, or at the initiative of at least half of its effective members.”
This body is made up of the president of the party and all the members of the board, the members of the board of the National Council, the presidents and vice presidents of the regional and district sections of the party, 30 effective members and 10 alternates, elected in the Convention.
