German court confirms conviction of Christian B., main suspect in ‘Maddie case’

The sentence was left open since the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) refused at the end of September to appeal against this sentence. This verdict had already been delivered by the German court at the end of 2019.

German Christian B. was sentenced in December 2019 to seven years in prison for the rape and robbery of a 72-year-old American woman in 2005 in Portugal, in Praia da Luz, where Maddie McCann disappeared in May 2007..

The man will be detained, which will allow investigators, who feared his possible early departure, to continue investigating the disappearance of the British minor.

This case suddenly accelerated in early June with the identification of this 43-year-old German. Christian B. is a repeat pedophile who is held in Kiel, northern Germany.

So, first, it was a defendant who was sentenced in 2011 to a prison term of one year and nine months, whose execution was suspended.

Subsequently, in 2016, a criminal case was initiated against the same person in Germany for unlawful acts committed in Portugal and, since the target was in that country, the Hannover Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) issued a European arrest warrant. Portugal authorized the surrender of the suspect to Germany and he was subsequently sentenced to one year and three months in prison.

In 2018, the deputy from Flensburg, Germany, asked the Portuguese judicial authorities to renounce the application of the principle of specialty and consent to the execution of the sentence imposed on the accused in 2011 (one year and nine months in prison).

In the absence of a response from the Portuguese judicial system, the suspect had to be released and shortly thereafter transferred to the Netherlands and then to Italy.

Germany then decided to issue a new European arrest warrant against Christian B. to enforce the 2011 sentence, which led to his arrest in Italy, where the competent local judicial authority validated his extradition to his country of origin.

Subsequently, in November 2018, a German court issued a new arrest warrant against the same defendant to initiate a new criminal case related to acts (rape) committed in Portugal in 2005.

Christian B. is a suspect in the murder of three-year-old Maddie, who was on vacation with her parents when she disappeared from the hotel room where she was sleeping.

In mid-June, the Brunswick prosecution said it had “concrete evidence or facts” to support the belief that the girl had died, but not “forensic evidence” as no human remains were found.

According to Christian B.’s lawyer quoted in the local press, the man denies any involvement in Maddie’s disappearance.
